The Los Angeles chapter is delighted to present the beloved Texan, harpist and teacher Louise Trotter, in a 4-hour workshop (9:30 am - 1:30 pm; bring a sack lunch), followed by a late-afternoon concert.  (You may attend both workshop and concert, or just one or the other.)

Versatile harpists of today need a wide range of repertoire to create the most opportunities to perform! It is rewarding to be able to arrange or adapt one's own music for any occasion, whether pop, folk or religious in nature.

The workshop will cover such topics as:

  • Music sources, shortcuts to arranging, how to read chord symbols & add basic harmony

  • How to use a Fake Book, chord symbols and different bass patterns

  • How to create beautiful and easy arpeggios and glissandos, pedal-lever slides, and other special effects

  • Modern harmony, with minimum accidentals!

  • Adapting music for lever harps---managing or avoiding accidentals

  • Playing in different musical styles - Bass patterns and rhythms, ornaments
  • Creating your stage personality- Dealing with stage fright, developing your style

Louise has a spirit of fun and sharing, which makes her a favorite among concert audiences and workshop participants. She has given pop workshops all over the U.S., in Canada, and the Clarsach Society of London and Edinburgh.
Her down home sense of humor and laid back style make her workshops and concerts a hit, with her wide repertoire of audience pleasers.

Ms. Trotter has prepared fun and informative workshop materials for both the pedal harp and the lever harp.  Harpists of all ages and levels will benefit from her eclectic style and range of music.

It is preferable for each workshop attendee to have a harp at hand (i.e: bring your own harp if possible), but if not, we can take turns on those available. Pedal and folk harps are all welcome. Please bring a music stand. There will be normal chairs, but you may bring your own harp bench if you prefer.

Material covered will start with beginners and become more advanced as the session goes on. It is not necessary to prepare anything to perform.

Louise uses both hands-on and lecture techniques during her workshops, and everyone from beginners to advanced goes home with practical new knowledge, and most importantly has fun in the process.

The workshop is open to AHS-LA members and non-members; but members will receive a FREE copy of Louise's CD "HARP TEXAS STYLE"! (Membership information is here.)

A few hours after the workshop, the late-afternoon concert (in the same location) will have something for everyone -  from light classics, to popular favorites, to Louise's trademark Texan country music and humor!

(For those attending both the workshop and the concert, our current plan for 1:30 to 4 pm is to take a FREE field trip (walking or driving our own cars) to the Pacific Harps showroom 8 blocks away, and maybe to the Harp in LA showroom just a couple more blocks out of the way.)
