Los Angeles Celebration of the Harp: New Music Composition Competition*
The purpose of this composition competition is to encourage new works for harp, develop broader connections between the harp and the city of Los Angeles, and generate lasting collaborations between harpists and composers.
There is no entry fee, and the competition is open to composers of all ages, locations and nationalities.
Description of Composition Expectations
- Composition for solo pedal harp
- 5-8 minutes long
- Inspired by or about the city of Los Angeles, its history or environs
- newly composed (not yet published or performed)
Awards
- Cash prizes of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $300 for third place
- Premiere concert in November of 2014 featuring the winning pieces
- Live recording of the premiere concert
Requirements
- Application
- MP3 non-commercial recording of a harpist playing the composition (no MIDI files)
- PDF of the score
Directions
All application materials should be submitted digitally. Please submit your application first. When you submit your application, you will be e-mailed a confirmation that the application has been received. In this confirmation will be your identification number. As judging will be 'blind' (composers' identities unknown to the judges), please put this ID number on your recording and on the score; do not put the composer's name or any other personally identifiable information on the recording or the score. (Please do include the title of the piece and the approximate duration of the piece on the recording and the score.) Then submit your MP3 recording and PDF score to education@harpsocietyla.org.
Deadline
June 21, 2014. All application materials, including recordings and scores, must be received on or before June 21, 2014.
